For Isaac, whose adventures always begin with a walk outdoors and end with a warm place to rest together. Love Dad.
Page 4 · Story
One sunny morning, Isaac and Dad went to the park. Isaac ran ahead through the tall grass, and Dad followed close behind.
Page 5 · Story
"Dad, look!" Isaac pointed at a bush beside the old oak tree. Something round and speckled was peeking out from under the leaves.
Page 6 · Story
It was an egg! It was big and blue, with golden speckles all over. "Whose egg is this?" Isaac whispered.
Page 7 · Story
Dad looked all around, but there was no nest and no mother anywhere. "Let's take it home and keep it warm," he said. So they carried it carefully, all the way home.
Page 8 · Story
At home, Dad found a soft yellow blanket and a big basket. Isaac tucked the egg inside, snug as could be.
Page 9 · Story
They waited beside it every day. Isaac built a tall tower of blocks so the egg would have something to look at. "Are you ready yet?" he asked.
Page 10 · Story
One quiet morning, the egg went crack. Then crackle. Then CRACK!
Page 11 · Story
Out popped a little green head with two tiny horns. "A dragon!" Isaac gasped. The baby dragon blinked its big golden eyes and sneezed a tiny puff of smoke.
Page 12 · Story
The little dragon was as green as a new leaf. It nibbled Isaac's shoelace and wagged its tail like a puppy.
Page 13 · Story
"It needs a name," said Dad. Isaac thought very hard. "Sprout!" he said. "Because it's little and green and growing." Sprout chirped happily.
Page 14 · Story
Sprout grew and grew. Soon Sprout was as big as a dog and loved to play chase around the living room.
Page 15 · Story
Swish went Sprout's tail. CRASH went Isaac's tower! Blocks tumbled everywhere. "Oh, Sprout," said Isaac. Dad laughed and laughed.
Page 16 · Story
Together they stacked the blocks back up, even taller than before. Then they all flopped down for a rest.
Page 17 · Story
Sprout gazed out the window at the birds. Then Sprout stretched out two big green wings and flapped them. Whoosh, whoosh! "I think Sprout wants to fly," said Dad.
Page 18 · Story
Out in the backyard, Sprout took a big running start. Flap, flap, flap! Sprout rose as high as Dad's nose...
Page 19 · Story
...and then, PLOP! Sprout landed bottom-first in the flower bed, with a daisy stuck on one horn. Isaac giggled and giggled. "Try again, Sprout!" he cheered.
Page 20 · Story
Sprout tried again and again, until at last Sprout could glide over the whole yard. Now Sprout was as big as a pony. "Sprout, may we come too?" Isaac asked.
Page 21 · Story
Dad lifted Isaac onto Sprout's back and climbed up behind him, holding on tight. Then, WHOOSH! Up they went, over the fence and above the treetops.
Page 22 · Story
They soared over rooftops and chimneys. Then Isaac heard a small sound. "Meow!"
Page 23 · Story
A little striped cat was stuck on a rooftop, high above the ground. "Don't worry, kitty!" Isaac called. "We're coming!" Sprout glided down gently toward the roof.
Page 24 · Story
Dad reached out with steady hands and scooped the cat up. "Got you," he said softly.
Page 25 · Story
Isaac held the cat close as Sprout lifted off the rooftop and floated down, down, down, toward the garden below.
Page 26 · Story
Down in the garden, a lady was calling, "Marmalade! Where are you?" Isaac handed her the cat. "Marmalade was on the roof," he said. "Sprout helped!"
Page 27 · Story
"Thank you, all of you," she said, hugging Marmalade tight. Then Isaac and Dad leaned back against Sprout's warm side, tired and happy, as the sun went down.
