The waves at Sunny Cove rolled in soft and sparkling. Maya raced along the wet sand swinging a bucket, and her little brother Jason splashed right behind her. Then a smooth green head lifted out of the foam. "Hello up there," said a sea turtle.

Page 5 · Story

"Down below, our coral palace has lost its magic pearl," the turtle said. "Without it, the whole reef is growing dim. Would you two help me find it?" Maya's eyes went wide. Jason forgot all about the bucket.

"We'll help!" said Maya, and Jason nodded so hard his whole body bounced. The turtle nudged two small shell bracelets onto the sand. "Put these on," she said. "They hold a little ocean magic. My name is Oona, and I know the way."

Page 7 · Story

The moment the shells touched their wrists, a fizzing tickle rushed down to their toes. Maya's legs became a shimmering teal tail. Jason's turned orange and gold like a sunset. "I'm a merman!" Jason shouted. "And we can breathe underwater!" laughed Maya, ducking under a wave to check.

Oona led the way down, down, into a world of blue. Coral bloomed beneath them in pink, purple, and gold, and fish flickered past like scattered confetti. "The pearl fell from the palace tower during a great storm," Oona said. "The waves pulled it toward this reef."

Page 9 · Story

Maya swished her new tail and glided in a loop. "Then we search every nook!" she said. Jason peered into a cluster of coral. "Not here," he reported. "Only a very grumpy crab."

A wide shadow slid over the sand. A spotted eagle ray glided down, its great fins rippling like a cape. "You seek something round and glowing?" the ray asked. "I saw the current carry it toward the octopus's coral garden."

Page 11 · Story

"Which way is that?" asked Jason. The ray tipped one spotted wing toward a tumble of pink coral. "That way, little merman. Ask the octopus. She sees everything with two clever eyes and eight busy arms." "Thank you!" called Maya, and off they swam.

The coral garden was as tidy as a treasure chest. Shells sat in neat rows, sponges were fluffed, and in the middle an octopus was polishing a pebble. "A pearl?" she said, curling one arm thoughtfully. "Yes. It rolled right through my garden. I nearly caught it!"

Page 13 · Story

The octopus pointed three arms at once toward a narrow coral passage. "The current swept it that way, toward the old tunnel. I never go there. Far too dark for my liking." Jason gulped. Maya took his hand. "We'll go together," she said.

At the end of the passage, a huge round stone sat wedged in the tunnel mouth. Not even a minnow could squeeze past. Beside it, a shark was pushing with his nose and puffing hard.

Page 15 · Story

"Oh, hello," the shark said, a little embarrassed. "The storm rolled this here. I've been shoving all week, but it's far too heavy for one shark." Maya studied the stone. "Maybe not too heavy for one shark, one turtle, and two of us."

"Everyone find a spot!" Maya called. The shark set his nose against the stone. Oona braced her shell. Maya and Jason pressed their hands flat and dug in with their tails. "On three," said Jason. "One... two... THREE!"

Page 17 · Story

They pushed and pushed until the stone groaned, rocked, and rolled aside with a great sandy whoosh. Beyond it, the tunnel opened wide and blue. "You did it!" the shark cheered. "Go on, I'll keep the way clear."

The tunnel led to a wide sandy basin where a single coral tower rose like a castle turret. Floating above it, humming softly, was a whale. "Something bright drifted down here after the storm," the whale rumbled. "It settled at the foot of that tower, and the sand covered it up."

Page 19 · Story

The whale swept her enormous tail slowly over the bottom. A thin curtain of sand lifted and swirled away. There, glowing pale and rosy at the base of the tower, sat the pearl. "There it is!" whispered Jason.

Jason scooped up the pearl. It was warm and heavy and lit his face with a soft pink glow. "Careful," said Maya, cupping her hands beneath his. "We carry it together."

Page 21 · Story

"Thank you, whale!" the children called, and the whale gave a rumbling laugh that tickled their ears. "To the palace," said Oona. "Follow me, and hold on tight to that pearl."

The palace rose from the seafloor in spires of white coral and windows of sea glass. But everything looked gray and sleepy without its pearl. On a tall coral throne waited the Sea Queen, her silver tail curled beneath her.

Page 23 · Story

Maya and Jason swam forward and held out the pearl together. "Your Majesty," said Maya, "we brought it home." The queen lifted it high, and light flooded every hallway. Pink, then gold, then bright ocean blue. "Thank you so much, heroes!" she said.

The palace filled with music and dancing. Fish spun in circles, seahorses bobbed, and Oona swayed her flippers to the beat. "You listened to the ray, the octopus, the shark, and the whale," said the Sea Queen. "That is how true treasure is found."

Page 25 · Story

She gave Maya and Jason a spiral shell that glowed softly, just like the pearl. "Hold it to your ear," she said, "and you will always hear the palace singing." Jason listened. "It's singing my name!" he giggled.

Oona guided them up through the blue until sunlight danced on the water. As soon as their bracelets touched dry sand, the fizzing tickle came back, and their tails were legs once more. "Race you to the towel!" said Jason, but he didn't move.

Page 27 · Story

Instead they stood at the shoreline and waved. "Come back anytime," called Oona. "The palace will always be there for you." Maya held the shell to her ear, Jason leaned close, and far below, the palace sang.
